In 2011, Fondazione Agnelli released its first Report on the state of junior secondary schools in Italy, published by Laterza; the document noted a decline in learning between primary and junior secondary school, and a surge in the gaps in results achieved by students, based on their socio-cultural background. One of the elements at the origin of this crisis was the peculiar, uneasy situation teaching staff were in, which stemmed from a variety of dimensions: age, training, professional standards, recruitment, motivations and career.
After 10 years, the Report on Junior Secondary Schools is back in an updated 2021 edition. Edited by Barbara Romano and completed in collaboration with a team of researchers, this is the first entirely digital report released by Fondazione Agnelli (design, digital and editorial development were entrusted to and managed by Dataninja).
Thanks to updated data and analyses, ten years after our first report we strive to understand why learning is still not satisfactory, gaps and inequalities continue to grow, and teaching is unable to renew itself – while students appear increasingly dissatisfied with their time at school and teachers struggle to find the best teaching strategies for a difficult and delicate age. The report also includes a series of school policy proposals.
