Fondazione Agnelli joins family, friends, and colleagues from the University of Oxford in grieving over the loss of Professor Martin McLaughlin, former Agnelli-Serena Professor of Italian Studies.
Professor McLaughlin was a leading scholar on Renaissance literature, an outstanding translator and lecturer. Generations of Italianists have greatly benefitted from his wisdom, kindness and good humour. He had been teaching at Oxford in the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages since 1990, first based at Christ Church and then, since 2001, as the Agnelli-Serena Professor, at Madgalen College.
The Agnelli-Serena Professorship of Italian Studies at Oxford University was founded over a century ago and revitalized by Avvocato Agnelli in the late 1980s. This chair focuses on Italian literature, history, and culture. The current chairholder is Professor Simon Gilson, a distinguished Dante scholar.
